presidential debate. jessica, thanks. also in new york city mitt romney speaking at the clinton global initiative just ahead of the president. romney focused on foreign policy as well vowing he would link u.s. foreign aid to trade with help going to developing countries that remove barriers to investment and trade. he also discussed unrest in the middle east and said he would have a different approach than president obama. >> a lot of americans including myself are developed -- excuse me, are troubled by developments in the middle east. syria has witnessed the killing of tens of thousands of people. the president of egypt is a member of the muslim brotherhood. our em bass dor to libya was assassinated in a terrorist attack. iran is moving towards nuclear weapons capability. we somehow feel that we're at the mercy of events rather than shaping events. a year from now i hope to return this meeting as president having made substantial progress towards the forms i've outlined. i also hope to remind the world of the goodness and the bigness of the american heart. never apologize for america

choices is part of the debate. romney's campaign is no different. take a listen. >> if a student wants to go to a charter school or parochial or private school, the student can go and the federal money goes with the student. so that we -- we allow more choice for parents. i like every parent to have a choice and every child to have a chance. >> as for the teachers, savannah guthrie sat down with president obama and asked him about the strike in his hometown of chicago which pitted his former chief of staff against unions who support politically he does depend on. >> mitt romney said that president obama has chosen his side in this fight that you sided with the unions and last spring he said he can't talk up reform while indulging in groups that block it. >> well, you know, i think governor romney and a number of folks try to politicize the issue and do a lot of teacher bashing. when i meet teachers all across the country, they are so devoted and so dedicated to their kids. what we have tried to do is actually break through this left/right conservative liberal gridlock. >> joining me no

debate sessions with chris van holland and campaigned yesterday in the state of virginia, keeping romney's comments about the 47% in his line of attack. >> he attacks the 47% of the american people who he says paid no federal taxes. and he attacks, he, romney, attacking someone on taxes? woah. that's like me attacking someone for being passionate in politics. >> also yesterday here in new york city, president obama addressed the united nations. the general assembly there. the president strongly condemning the anti-islamic video that some say caused the unrest in the middle east, but he also says it did not justify the attack on the united states embassy. >> i know there are some who ask why don't we just ban such a video. and the answer is enshrined in our laws. our constitution protects the right to practice free speech. i accept that people are going to call me awful things every day. and i will always defend their right to do so. and we must agree, there is no speech that justifies mindless violence. >> in the last couple of weeks, he pointed out those are probably not the result of a

have for mitt romney given the state of the election campaign right now? >> well, i think, you know, the debates e very important for him. >> crucial? >> i think so. and i think if he's going to double down on that 47% remark, that will cause difficulties bee no know that the overwhelming number of those people work and have children and the reason they don't pay federal income taxes is the median income is as low as it was in 1995 now, and until the current eleion season, republicans and democrats crpported both the child tax it andhe earned income tax credit. this is a rejection of basicmor bipartisan policy to support workingfamilies. it is not a bunch freeloaders. >> there he goes. piers mo bringing up the 47% from the secretly videotaped moment in that fund-raiser back in, what, may. but no big sis hs going straight for that 47% line. noand quite interesting because bill clinton on my show tually a few months ago had, of course, supported mt romney over his record of bain capital and refused to join inhe obama super pac bashing of romney over that. >> that made news. >> it mad
